How to stay motivated while trying to lose weight

26th August, 2016

One of the most difficult things about trying to lose weight is staying motivated. We all have challenging days during diets, and it is important to know some techniques that you can use to overcome them. The first few weeks are often the hardest, and once you get through this, you should find it a lot easier. With that being said, read on for some top tips on how to stay motivated while trying to lose weight.

  • Don’t be a perfectionist – There is only one place to start, and this is by avoiding being too harsh on yourself. There are going to be days when you have dessert, or days when you eat more than you should have for dinner. However, so long as these days aren’t often, you will achieve your goal. You can ruin your motivation by being too hard on yourself.
  • Surround yourself with health – If your kitchen cupboards are stocked with unhealthy food, it is going to be much more difficult for you to lose weight. This is why you need to buy a lot of healthy food, and keep a bowl of fruit on your counter. Moreover, keep your running shoes in sight and invest in some exercise equipment.
  • Jot down why you want to lose weight – You should take time to sit down and think about the reasons you really want to lose weight. Do you want to feel good about yourself every time you look in the mirror? Maybe you are worried about your health? Perhaps you want to play with your children without getting tired? No matter what your reasons are, jot them all down. Make sure you revisit these goals every week, or whenever you are struggling.
  • Find role models for losing weight – By role models, we don’t mean that you should look on the Internet for a celebrity (who has probably been photoshopped within an inch of his or her life), and looking at that photograph every day. Instead, we mean finding someone that has a story you can relate to. There are many people that have posted their weight loss stories on the Internet to share with others. These are the sorts of people you should be looking up to, and it will give you the motivation you need to hit your goals.
  • Visualise how amazing you are going to look after losing weight – Visualising is a great technique, which works for a lot of people. Of course, it is important to be realistic. However, imagining what your new body is going to look like and how amazing you are going to feel is likely to give you that push to get through the day.
  • Set realistic goals – One of the main reasons why people end up unmotivated when they are on a diet is because they set themselves unrealistic goals. If you expect to lose a stone in a week and have abs within a month, you are always going to be disappointed. Instead, if you set realistic targets, you will feel a sense of achievement every week, and this will give you the push you need to achieve your overall goals.
  • Expect setbacks – Most people have setbacks. We are all human, and we all like to enjoy ourselves. Don’t give up just because you have had one set back. Instead, pick yourself back up and be healthy tomorrow. Tomorrow is a new day, as they say!
  • Find a diet buddy – If you know someone else who wants to lose weight or get healthy, you should team up. You can go to swimming classes or to the gym together, and you can keep a check on each other to make sure that neither of you fall off track. If you do not know anyone personally that is on a diet or trying to lead a healthier lifestyle, consider joining a forum online. There are many weight loss communities on the Internet where you will find plenty of tips and you will be able to ask questions too.
  • Reward yourself – Whenever you reach a goal, you should reward yourself. For example, you could reward yourself every time you lose five pounds. By this, we don’t mean you should treat yourself to a big slice of chocolate cake! Choose rewards that are not diet-related, for example, you could buy a new pair of jeans or book yourself in for a spa treatment.

All in all, there is no denying that losing weight can be difficult, especially in the beginning. However, the key to sticking to your diet is remaining motivated. If you use the tips mentioned above, you should have a lot more good days than bad ones. And, remember, if you do have a bad day, don’t beat yourself up about it – start again tomorrow.
