Linh's story

“I am so grateful to the Now Health Team for everything they did for me and my family. My rare condition was completely unexpected and it was distressing to discover this while I was pregnant. However from the initial diagnosis all the way through to my kidney transplant, the team were nothing but supportive and ensured I could access the best care when I needed it most. Having the reassurance that my mother’s transplant donor costs would be covered was also a real relief. Thank you Now Health!”

Linh is a Vietnamese national living in Singapore. As an expat living abroad, in 2016 she decided to purchase a Now Health International health insurance plan.

A couple of years later in 2018 Linh fell pregnant. Unfortunately her health quickly started to deteriorate and she had to be admitted to hospital several times during the early stages of the pregnancy. After several tests it was discovered that she had a rare condition known as Berger's disease which had resulted in kidney failure.

As the condition posed a serious risk to her baby, it was advised that she should be admitted to hospital several weeks before the due date to ensure the baby could be monitored. A month after her admission to hospital in September 2018, Linh gave birth to a baby girl.

Due to her medical condition and complications with the pregnancy, Linh had to stay in the hospital for ten days after giving birth and her baby had to stay for a further four months for treatment. Linh’s Now Health plan meant that the hospital costs for both her and her baby, which totalled more than USD 150,000, were covered in full.

Unfortunately that was not the end of the story as Linh’s renal failure had progressed rapidly, likely as a result of the additional burden on her kidney during the pregnancy. Her doctor advised her that she needed a kidney transplant.

Luckily for Linh her mother was a match and the transplant was arranged for March 2019 at the National Hospital of Singapore. Her plan meant that the medical costs for both her and her mother as the donor were covered, even though her mother was not insured on Linh’s Now Health plan. We arranged the guarantee of payment with the hospital in advance so Linh’s family did not have to lay out the cash for the procedure. Following the transplant, Linh, her month and baby are all now recovering well.

Samantha, Senior Clinical Specialist at Now Health commented, “Linh was extremely brave throughout the whole process, despite having to juggle her health needs with the demands of a young baby.  I was moved to hear that Linh’s mother was able to be her kidney donor as otherwise she would have needed extensive dialysis until a donor could be found, and we are delighted they are all now in recovery. After her successful treatment Linh sent us a lovely picture of her baby – this kind of personal interaction with our members is the best part of my job and is what motivates me the most.”
