How Does the Chinese Healthcare System Work?

The Chinese healthcare system has undergone huge reforms since the early 2000s. Healthcare in China is delivered by a combination of both public and private sector providers, with an estimated 95% of the population having basic health insurance cover. The Chinese government continues to work on reducing the cost of public healthcare, with the aim of insurance covering 70% of costs and every resident being able to access affordable healthcare by the end of 2020. At present, residents of China are required to pay for their medical treatment upfront and then seek reimbursement of their medical costs via their insurance plan.

Some gaps remain in the public health system in China, meaning residents often end up without of pocket costs for emergency transportation, while paying into your own basic public health insurance package doesn’t necessarily provide cover for non-working family members.

Cover these gaps yourself and ensure more of your overall medical costs are covered with private medical and health insurance from API WorldCare Plan.

How Can You Access Healthcare in China?

If you are planning to live in China, you have a number of healthcare options available to you. If you are moving into China to work or study, you will be able to pay into a basic public health insurance plan. As an employee, your employer will also make a contribution on your behalf. Having this level of insurance will enable you to access public healthcare in China.

Another option you should explore is to take out your own private health and medical insurance. Private healthcare facilities in China have a reputation for being of the highest quality, with some private hospitals even being described as “spa-like”. Public sector healthcare is not delivered via private facilities anywhere in China, so the only means of accessing this is to have an international health insurance plan to ensure you can cover the increased costs.

Why Choose Now Health International's partner for Private Medical and Health Insurance in China?

Our API WorldCare Essential Plan, which will cover you for any in-patient and day-patient care you require while living in China, and will enable you to access private healthcare facilities that you wouldn’t be able to on a basic public health insurance plan.

With only up to 70% of your costs covered and gaps remaining in Chinese public healthcare, can you afford for you and your family not to be covered?

Join one of our API WorldCare medical and health insurance packages to ensure you’re covered when living in China.

Linh's story

“I am so grateful to the Now Health Team for everything they did for me and my family. My rare condition was completely unexpected and it was distressing to discover this while I was pregnant. However from the initial diagnosis all the way through to my kidney transplant, the team were nothing but supportive and ensured I could access the best care when I needed it most. Having the reassurance that my mother’s transplant donor costs would be covered was also a real relief. Thank you Now Health!”
