What routine treatment does my private health plan cover?

When you’re searching for a private health plan, it’s vital you know what routine treatment is covered before looking at additional features and benefits.

When searching for a private health plan, you must ensure you have the cover you need.

Doing so means you have peace of mind wherever you are. It also helps you avoid paying for an elevated level of cover that isn't necessarily a fit for your circumstances.

Ultimately, the treatment your private health plan enables you to access will depend on your cover level. If you pay for enhanced cover, your premium will be higher, but you'll have a greater level of protection and more treatment options should you become ill or have an accident.

In recent years, we have produced several articles that explore choosing a private health plan, typical exclusions that apply to health insurance, and what you should consider before adding dental cover to your plan.

While it’s worth knowing about all these aspects, it’s also good to know what routine treatment types you'll be able to access, irrespective of your level of cover.*

Although the specific level of cover you have and plan limits will depend on your plan, you will get at least a partial refund for all of the below with any Now Health International plan, subject to any exclusions, such as for pre-existing conditions.

Let’s take a look.

In-patient and day-patient care

This means that you’ll have cover for your hospital charges for any care and treatment you receive while admitted to hospital as an in-patient or day-patient. As well as cover for the treatment itself, you also have cover for accommodation costs to stay on a semi-private or private ward, nursing care, drugs and dressings, and operating theatre charges if you need an operation.

You will also have cover for any related ancillary charges. These are costs you incur resulting from your treatment, such as buying or hiring crutches, other walking aids, or a self-propelled non-electronic wheelchair.

Organ transplant

You’ll have cover for any treatment you receive for and in relation to a human organ transplant where you receive a kidney, pancreas, liver, heart, lung, bone marrow, or heart and lung.

This cover is contingent on you receiving your transplant in an internationally-accredited facility by accredited surgeons and where the organ procurement follows World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines.

Organ transplant cover doesn’t cover the costs of searching for a donor or organ, but will cover the donor’s medical costs within specified plan limits.

Congenital disorders

Congenital disorders are conditions that have been present since birth, and our health plans cover in-patient treatment for such conditions. However, they will be treated as a pre-existing condition and subject to underwriting if they are known.

You will still be covered for any undiagnosed and undetected congenital disorders, and we wouldn’t treat these as a pre-existing condition.

Rehabilitation

Often, undergoing surgery or some other form of treatment is just the first step to recovery. It may take weeks, months, or even years of rehabilitation before you're 100% back to health.

Our health plans will support you this time, covering admission to a recognised rehabilitation unit following a referral from a specialist to continue your treatment.

Cancer treatment

50% of us will develop cancer in our lifetimes.

While many health insurance providers only offer cancer cover at an additional cost, all Now Health International plans provide a full refund for cancer treatment you receive as an in-, day-or out-patient. Coverage includes oncologist, surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy fees from the point of diagnosis.

Day-patient or out-patient surgery

Thankfully, not every medical condition is life-changing or involves spending days in hospital or months attending rehabilitation.

When you need to undergo a relatively simple procedure as a day- or out-patient, your health plan will cover you for surgical procedures performed in a hospital, day-care facility or out-patient department.

You’ll have cover for medical evacuation and repatriation

As well as providing cover for various routine treatments, our health plans also provide cover for evacuation to the nearest medical facility where you can receive emergency medical treatment. We also cover repatriation to your country of nationality or residence for yourself and an escort.

Ensure your health plan works for you

If you choose a Now Health International plan, you will receive at least a partial refund for all of these treatments, so long as they wouldn’t be an exclusion due to being a pre-existing condition or for any other reason.

Above all else, it’s vital when searching for international health insurance that you find a plan that works for you and you know the level of cover you have.
