How Does the Maltese Healthcare System Work?

Malta has both a free at the point of delivery healthcare system – known as the government healthcare service – as well as a number of private healthcare facilities. Malta is renowned for having one of the best healthcare systems anywhere in the world, consistently ranking in the top five of the World Health Organization’s annual healthcare rankings. Malta’s main hospital, the Mater Dei, is well-known for being one of the biggest medical buildings in all of Europe.

Anyone who lives in Malta is entitled to access and use the country’s public healthcare system. For expats, this access is reliant on having made social insurance and social security contributions, from which the Maltese public healthcare system is funded. As such, the Maltese government suggests all incoming residents take out a private health plan, although it is not a legal requirement or precondition of being able to live in the country.

How Can You Access Healthcare in Malta?

If you’re a legal resident of Malta and make social insurance and social security contributions, you are entitled to use the country’s public healthcare system. You may still be able to access public health facilities outside of these circumstances but will have to pay 100% of your medical costs in order to do so.

Whether you are moving to Malta to retire, or for employment or other purposes, it is worth topping up any entitlement you have to use the public healthcare system with a private health plan. Although Malta’s public healthcare system is well-regarded and not known for excessive waiting times, the system does have a reputation for being somewhat inefficient regarding healthcare and treatment outcomes. Ensuring you’re able to access private healthcare facilities of the highest standard via a private health plan will give you the peace of mind you need when living in a new location.

Linh's story

“I am so grateful to the Now Health Team for everything they did for me and my family. My rare condition was completely unexpected and it was distressing to discover this while I was pregnant. However from the initial diagnosis all the way through to my kidney transplant, the team were nothing but supportive and ensured I could access the best care when I needed it most. Having the reassurance that my mother’s transplant donor costs would be covered was also a real relief. Thank you Now Health!”
