Healthcare System in Thailand
You may be relocating to Thailand permanently or just looking for a new international health insurance provider, either way, it’s important to know what’s available both in terms of health insurance provision, and the country’s medical care and facilities.
With an estimated population of 67,764,000 and male life expectancies at 66 and female life expectancies at 74, Thailand’s health care system has only recently adopted the universal coverage scheme and it is therefore fundamental to cover you and your family with international health insurance in order to get the best possible care if and when you need it.
Although health care has vastly improved in the last two decades it is not yet at the same level as more developed countries. The main issue is that Thailand does not have an established primary health care infrastructure; rather, the majority of the doctors are specialists in particular fields. As a result there is a shortage of General Practitioners and getting advice or treatment for minor medical injuries and ailments can be problematic. This makes it all the more important to ensure you are fully covered with international health insurance before relocating.
Thailand’s best hospitals are located in the major cities; Bangkok is home to several good medical centres such as the Bumrungrad International Hospital and the Bangkok Christian Hospital. There is also the Phuket International hospital, Chiang Mai University Hospital and the Pattaya International Hospital.
The Thai emergency services are not as advanced as other nations. Traffic congestion encroaches on response times because ambulances are not shown the same understanding from motorists as you might see in other cities. It is advised to carry your medical insurance card on you at all times.
Before you go
It is key to go with the recommended vaccinations against; Typhoid, Hepatitis A, Diphtheria, Terbucolosis, Hepatitis B, Rabies, Cholera, Japanese B Encephalitis and you will require a certificate of vaccination for Yellow Fever if you are arriving from an infected area.
