Guide to Health Insurance in Sri Lanka

If you are relocating to Sri Lanka, it is essential that you have a comprehensive private health insurance policy in place before leaving.

As the standard of health care facilities is below that of western countries, health insurance is vital. In more severe cases, medical evacuation to another country with better health facilities is likely to be the only option.

As many regional parts of Sri Lanka have experienced ongoing conflict between the government and Tamil Tigers, this has left healthcare facilities in these regions in need of attention and funding. Medical facilities are more extensive in the major centres.

Healthcare facilities

The standard of medical treatment in Sri Lanka is generally below that of the UK and other developed nations. Medical facilities and particularly emergency services outside of the capital Colombo are limited, although medical facilities within the capital are reasonably equipped and well-staffed.

Mosquito-borne diseases dengue fever, malaria, chikungunya fever, Japanese encephalitis and filariasis are frequent occurences, and it is advised that people relocating to Sri Lanka take measures against insect bites by always wearing insect repellent and ensuring that accommodation is mosquito proof. Dengue-carrying mosquitoes tend to bite at dawn and dusk, so particular precaution is advised at these times of day, although bites can occur at any time of the day.

Infectious diseases such as typhoid, hepatitis, leptospirosis and rabies are also prevalent. Expats and travellers are advised to boil all drinking water or to drink bottled water, avoiding ice cubes and raw food.

Before you go

Ensure you are up-to-date with all vaccines and make sure you have a stock of malaria prophylactics. Ensure that your accommodation is air-conditioned and screened to ensure the best chance at keeping mosquitoes out of living spaces.
